Oxygen absorbers
are small bags containing a mixture of iron powder and salt that can absorb and bind oxygen in a sealed environment. Their main purpose is to protect products that are susceptible to oxidation or degradation due to exposure to oxygen.
When exposed to oxygen, the iron powder reacts with the oxygen to form iron oxide and the salt acts as a catalyst for this reaction. This process is known as oxidation. By binding up the oxygen, the oxygen absorbents prevent it from reaching the product inside the package and thus reduce the risk of degradation.
These absorbers are particularly useful for food packaging, pharmaceuticals, and other products that need to be stored for a long time without risking deterioration.
More about Oxygen Absorbers
Correct size and number: It is important to use enough oxygen absorbers to match the amount of oxygen that needs to be absorbed in the package. Each absorbent can absorb the oxygen in approx. 1.4L of air. A pretty good yardstick is to add one absorbent for every liter the bag holds.
The oxygen absorbents come vacuum packed in packs of 25. To extend the shelf life of the oxygen absorbers and to maintain their effectiveness, it is important to store them in a cool, dry place and preferably in a sealed container until they are to be used.
