Sawyer
Sawyer Products is an American manufacturer of, among other things, water filters, which millions of people around the world have used to purify drinking water. Something that characterizes Sawyer's water filter is the enormous capacity where each filter cleans hundreds of thousands of liters of water. The fact that their water filters can also be threaded together with a PET bottle is downright ingenious.
How does Sawyer's water filter work?
To understand how a filter from Sawyer works, we first need to understand what potential harmful substances are in the water we are going to drink.
Water as a carrier of infection
The infectious agents that can be spread through water include viruses, bacteria and parasitic protozoa. Although we in Sweden are fortunate to have generally high water quality, outbreaks do occur. In recent years, perhaps the most noted case is the Cryptosporidie outbreak in Östersund
In an interview with Johan Lindh, who is a parasitologist at Uppsala University, it appears that nearly 3,000 people have permanent stomach problems after the outbreak in Östersund, Sweden where 47,000 people are estimated to have been infected by the parasite Cryptosporidium.
There are several reasons why outbreaks occur. One of the reasons may be that we bring infections home from trips which we then spread via the waste water. Another cause could be floods as a result of climate change where manure or waste water comes out into the water sources. Typical infectious agents that can be spread that way are:
Protozoa (Amoebas, Giardia, Cryptosporidium)
Animal unicellular organisms, just like bacteria, end up in the water via human and animal feces
Bacteria (e-coli, Salmonella, Cholera
Unicellular organisms. Multiplies rapidly in warm environments, especially in water.
Viruses (Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, Polio
Small parasites. Can only reproduce in living cells because they do not own their own metabolism
Heavy metals & chemicals
In addition to living organisms, water can become unusable due to metals and chemicals that can sometimes be found in pesticides.
Can a Sawyer water filter remove all of these substances?
Absolutely! A filter from Sawyer is based on two techniques. One is a hollow fiber membrane filter that, due to its size, filters out everything down to bacteria and protozoa, the other is an active carbon fiber that also removes viruses, heavy metals and chemicals and makes the water safe to drink directly. Not all filters contain both technologies, but it is not always necessary either, as not all harmful substances are common in all water. Read more about harmful particles in water here
What different water filters does Sawyer use?
Firstly, we have the very popular filters such as Sawyer mini and Sawyer micro Squeeze with a huge liter capacity. The Sawyer mini filter is estimated to clean 400,000 liters of water and the Micro Squeeze filter is estimated to clean even more liters of water and should be able to be used as many times as desired. The Sawyer mini filter and Sawyer Squeeze filter are small in size and use only the hollow fiber technology that removes everything over 0.2 microns in size. The water is forced through the filter and can be drunk directly from the other end. These water filters are intended to be applied to a PET bottle and weigh almost nothing. These filters also have a lower price than many other filters and are, in our opinion, a really good buy. Sawyer Mini filter and Micro Squeeze filter work best in Nordic waters where the presence of viruses and heavy metals is limited. The fact that it is possible to only connect the filter to a PET bottle gives a wider range of use.
Sawyer water filter that removes viruses from water!
Sawyer also has products that also remove viruses from water. These water filters also contain a layer of activated carbon and remove anything over 0.1 micron in size. The filter is not able to clean as much water as other water filters due to the advanced and sensitive technology but is the best filter for use in warmer countries where the presence of viruses and heavy metals is more than usual. A water filter of this type is therefore a good purchase and the best choice for those of you who intend to use Sawyer filters abroad. The filter comes with a bottle and is easy to use straight out of the box, just squeeze water through the filter and drink straight from the bottle. Unfortunately, these water filters have a higher price but are the most competent products among Sawyer's water filters, are easy to use and receive the absolute highest rating.
