Petromax was founded over 100 years ago by Max Graetz whose nickname "petrolium  ax" forms the basis of the brand's name today. The journey began in 1910 when max worked at  Ehrich &Graetz  in Berlin, which created the first oil lamp in a standard that still holds  today. Max had wanted to create a lighting system for a long time driven by paraffin that was new to the past. Max developed a method that made gas out of paraffin, which then got a brightly luminous and warming flame. Since then, Petromax has continued to develop innovative and quality products for outdoor cooking over an open fire. The revolutionary technology

Graetz created the first pressure lamp, which in short means that the liquid from the container is preheated to the point where it evaporates. The hot steam is pushed with the help of a hand-operated pressure pump the steam further into the combustion chamber (the lamp itself) where it ignites and is consumed. A technique used in both lanterns and storm kitchens to this day.
