Feuerhand
Feuerhand's lanterns first illuminated life in the Saxon Ore Mountains in 1893. Herman Nier, who then ran an ironmongery, handcrafted his first lanterns there. With the advent of industrialization, the small workshop was replaced by a factory, where mechanical production churned out volumes that soon spread worldwide.
Five years after the start of mass production, the factory was acquired by Albert Frank Metalware, and the Nier brothers instead took over management. After several disagreements, Hermann Nier left the factory to continue production under his own brand with new patents.
During the period from 1918 to 1938, Feuerhand was the world's largest producer of hurricane lanterns, which came to an abrupt end during World War II when the German industry shifted its focus to war material. After the war, the factory's machines ended up in Russia, and the Nier family had to rebuild the business from scratch.
Today, Feuerhand belongs to Petromax, where production continues with the same pride, and a Feuerhand hurricane lantern still stands for the highest quality, just as it did back then.
